Al Owchar

AL OWCHAR is a singer, songwriter, musician, cowboy poet and luthier. He was born in Drumheller, grew up on a farm near Rocky Mountain House and currently resides in Calgary. While living on the farm he taught himself to play the guitar and harmonica and to sing and compose songs. Later in Calgary, Al continued to expand his musical interests by taking lessons on guitar, bass, banjo, accordion, mandolin and fiddle. He also played in local dance bands. In his early years, Al had the opportunity to play bass for some of the top Grand Ole Opry stars such as George Jones, Merle Travis, Red Foley, Hank Locklin, Slim Whitman and Marvin Rainwater. Today Al is still performing with his current dance band “Rusty Wires” and does singles and duets at cowboy poetry gatherings, corporate functions, senior’s lodges and private clubs. He has released four CD’s using mostly original material. Al has also recently appeared on two Cowboy Country TV episodes. When Al is not involved with music he is generally repairing or building musical instruments.

“ Al Owchar has been an inspiring individual, from every instrument that he has built to every song he has written or sung. When I heard the ‘Cabri Hockey Tripfor the first time, it made me wish I were there. I remember seeing some pictures at his house once, of him in the 1950’s playing bass guitar behind George Jones, and several other artists of the time… he had never mentioned I, even though I had known him for many years at that point. I have learned a lot of things, about a lot of things from Al. I’m proud and honoured to record his newest collection of wonderfully crafted songs”.
