Cowboy Poetry at the Lacombe Legion May 14th
Review by Ol' Ugly
It looked kinda quiet around the Lacombe Legion, Lacombe, AB, when I drove by it at about 3:30 pm. "Hmphh," I figgered,
"This ain't gonna be a big deal,"but as the feller said, "Ya gotta make the best of what ya got," so I went off and
started warming up.
Good job I did too, because when I got back at the Legion Hall, Jesse Fowler was getting the sound system in working order
and folks was coming outta the woodworks. When I turned around the Doll Sisters came into the room. I was thinking, "Hot
damn, they called out all us young people for this show. It's gonna be a barn burner, let me tell you!" Then that dang
old Ken Henley went and ruint it by standing up and saying, "I'm in on this, too!!!"
"Geez," I thought, "they let an old guy in on it. I betcha he's gonna ruin the fun."
But he didn't! As a matter of fact Ken brought a whole lot of fun and laughter with him. It was priceless to watch Ken's
boy with his mouth wide open when Ken started to tell some of the funniest cowboy poetry in his opening set. Wow, that
Ken Henley is a winner! I gotta hear more of him.
Then Jesse wanted to get in on the fun and he sure did a great job on his Johnny Cash song and for the whole four songs
of that set. That guy has been working at his craft and his guitar playing and singing is becoming better and better.
He is getting into Al Owcher territory with his guitar work.
The audience of about 70 people sure did start to get the great supper provided by Susan Fisher's crew from the Lacombe
Legion settle down with that foot tapping music. And when the Dolls Sisters hit that stage with their "Roots" music and a
bit of that Celtic beat with their fiddle and guitar music and songs. That sure did get feet stomping good. Those girls are
improving by leaps and bounds along with Jesse. I was sure proud to be on the same stage with them.
Yah, they did let Ol' Ugly get up and perform some of his long and wide tales. I got the chance to try out some of the
new stuff I've been working at over the winter. For some reason I find preachers kinda funny and Pastor Bob asked me if
I was just making fun of preachers for his beneift, but I swear I didn't know he was gonna be there.
After a brief intermission we had another kick at that dang stage and it seems Jesse, Ken and the Doll Sisters brought out
their good stuff. I was sitting there wondering, "Now, what am I gonna do to keep up with them?" But it ended well. We got
em laughing.
This Lacombe Legion Cowboy Poetry Night is a good fun night. I am sure the people in the audience will be telling others
about the fun. If you get a chance, get out to that show and have a great time like we did.
I know I'll be looking for ACPA's Ken Henley, Jesse Fowler and the Dolls Sister along the trail. They sure do the
ACPA proud.
